Chapter 15

The conversation continued, including the recommendation of the physician.

“I could not place Mother in an asylum. They are said to be hideous places that no one should be in.” Anne said, a sob escaping her. “The thought of her being in such a place would be horrible.”

“If we take her to Rosings, she will need to be kept in her rooms, with the medicine the physician has prescribed to keep her quiet and calm. We would require nurses around the clock, someone with her at all times.” Richard stated. “Surely there are plenty nurses to be hired to see that Aunt Catherine is kept comfortably at Rosings. Mother, do you know who we to whom we could speak to find the women we require?”

“I am certain we can hire the appropriate staff. Anne, it is your home. You should be the one to make the decision on who to hire. I can set up appointments, but you should interview the women.” Lady Matlock said to her niece. “It would be best to find the staff that works best in your home.”

“My home…as long as Mother is alive and at the house, it will always be her house. The staff are loyal to her, they will do nothing against her wishes. I do not think they will listen to anything I have to say.”

“Anne, it is your home. Your mother has not allowed you to do what you wished with the property, as she did not want to give up the control.” Lord Matlock explained. “Your father left the estate and his holdings to you to inherit upon your five and twentieth birthday. Your mother kept that from you. After speaking with Catherine this morning, I spoke to the solicitor who handled Rosings’ affairs. Your father’s will gave you the right to take possession and send your mother to the dower house. If I had known, I would have stood up to your mother years ago. If you wish to dismiss any servants who disobeys your orders, you are within your rights to do so.”

The heiress was surprised. “Are you certain? Mother always told me that I would inherit after she died.”

“I read the will myself. Your mother lied to you. It is your home; your decisions are what matter now. And if you prefer to move your mother to the dower house, you can do that too.”

Anne turned to Mrs Jenkinson. “You will stay with me, will you not?”

“Of course, Miss de Bourgh. Whatever you wish.”

“Please, Mildred, it is time we refer to each other as we do when we are at home. Mother never approved of the informal way we speak with each other, but her view no longer matters.” Anne’s eyes grew with delight, until suddenly, she became confused. “Is it terrible of me to be so excited when my mother is in such a state?”

“Your mother has controlled your life, telling you how things were to be done, refusing to allow you to make decisions on your own.
